Sanford MG-612 Surface Grinder. This is the Craigslist image in the ad for the grinder. Asking price was $1,200, and ended up paying $1,150. I frankly don't know if this was a good price or not, but I thought it was reasonable given the condition of the machine.

Since grinding a 60 deg bevel on almost 3 feet of steel bar would take about a million hours even with a commercial surface grinder, I compromised and went with the most expedient solution. I used a hand grinder (a 9" monster grinder that shakes the hell out of you) to grind the bevel to as close to 60 deg as I could get it (checking a lot with ...
Surface Finish is a measure of the overall texture of a surface that is characterized by the lay, surface roughness, and waviness of the surface. Surface Finish when it is intended to include all three characteristics is often called Surface Texture to avoid confusion, since machinists often refer to Surface Roughness as Surface Finish.

I used a stone surface grinder 50 yrs ago where I worked and from my memories it's not the best for most knife work. From my memory the stone SG is best for really precision work in the tenth of a thou range. But it's slow, I don't remember ever taking .005" at a pass. A buddy had a surface grinder he changed to belts and it worked really good.
We used surface grinders to do all the slide to frame fits back in the day. Started with a .250 wheel and cut them down to .050 on surface grinder, if I remember, to fit inside frame rails. Did thousands of 1911s and 2011s over several years this way.

The surface grinder I have set up and in use is a 55 year old doall, and it'll hold a tenth without really trying. Or maybe you feel that I don't know the difference?
