Had to register and reply to this thread because this sounds like such a common problem. I fixed a whirlpool top load HE auto sense washer, I think the model is W10338654a. It started making a not quite so grinding type of noise and eventually the thing stopped working. I turned it on and could hear the motor spin, so knew it was mechanical.
